Someone pointed out your podcast to us saying that my husband and I were mentioned and we were curious to hear a different opinion on religion (if we had known at the time of your interest in the conversation you would have been more than welcome–and are in the future). We are sorry if we came off across as “prideful” we are just both students of the subject and were initially asked about a book Nick was reading on liberation and slavery in the NT. We tend to be happy to discuss hobbies and interests (even non-religious subjects) when others are also interested.
Since you two seem open to hearing other thoughts and brought it up publicly, I thought I would just clarify some things since there seems to have been a misunderstanding on what was actually being claimed—possibly because only a small part of the conversation was overheard. The context was that Nick had been asked about what he was reading and it happened to be a book about slavery being treated as a moral PROBLEM in the NT with the apostle Paul himself being ANTI-SLAVERY.
Specifically, the more “nuanced view about slavery” had to do with the apostle Paul telling Philemon to treat his slave as a brother by setting him FREE—not prescribing a different form of slavery. We also discussed Gal 3:28 which lays out equality in Christ in the context of how one should treat others in the church (no privilege due to socio-economic status, ethnicity and gender), as opposed to the surrounding culture and even what they themselves found acceptable or took for granted as the norm.
We did also briefly discuss slavery in the Near Eastern context (possibly part of what you overheard) and how OT law codes differed from them and the NT—specifically, that the laws themselves resemble other ancient law codes and being early on the scene curbed an already existing near eastern slave trade (surprise the Bible was not written divorced from any context and culture), by forbidding human trafficking, requiring release after seven years with food and money, requiring that people wanting to leave slavery be allowed to go anywhere they want and be fed, severe punishments for hurting slaves…etc. Obviously this all presupposes a less than ideal world and even if it is hostile towards slavery it is still not perfect as it itself ‘progresses’ as the people themselves evolve–it was difficult getting people to do even these things as history and the text itself reveals.
