You are correct Jessie. Just tell your father, family member etc that you love them. Don’t expect to get it back, just get the satisfaction of getting the word out be enough. It is definitely a generational thing. I forgave my dad for a lack of affection and lots of criticism by realizing that he and my mom did much better with us 5 kids, than their parents did with them. And so on. I have done much better with my own son, than they did with us, which my mom acknowledged late in her life, but my dad could not. Told me I was a terrible person, mother etc. I was the good kid who always did and does follow the rules. But, we never wanted for anything growing up, and the parents were fair about freedom and rules, as long as you followed the few given to you. Really helped build my own personal responsibilities. I respect that. Find the good things you remember and stick with those.
