Jesse and Brittany are joined by Rory O’Connor, Ph.D. to discuss his book, “When it is Darkest: Why People Die by Suicide and What We Can Do to Prevent It.” In their discussion, they cover Rory’s background and motivation to study the topic of suicide, as well as the current rates of suicide in the United States and globally and the various difficulties associated with predicting suicide. Further, Rory discusses the common myths about suicide that he encounters in his work and the important items to focus on for suicide prevention. Rory also shares his views on the influence of public policy and inequality in society on suicide and the policy implications to assist those at risk of dying by suicide.

    Great interview. I’m not sure I’ve really listened to much about mental health & suicide since college over 10 years ago, so it’s good to hear the newer research & the myths surrounding it, too. ALSO- Best side dish ever: roasted brussel sprouts, and if you want to add a gourmet flare, mix in a bit of parmesan & garlic!
